Mutations

I work with Freakshow, ABC, Duck, SWAG and AD17. Here I have collected my photographs and notes on leaf shape, variegation and other plant changes.

01

Freakshow

History

Freakshow was bred by Jordan, known as Shapeshifter. The line began with a cross between a Pineapple Express female and a Holy Chiquita male, also known as Holy Banana. Shapeshifter fixed the leaf shape through inbreeding and selection for unusual leaf morphology. At F3 he handed the project to Nathaniel at Humboldt Seed Company, where selection continued for leaf shape and fruity aromas. By F4, the line reliably reproduced the FStp.-2 leaf form.

ABC

History

Australian Bastard Cannabis (ABC) is a mutation with small, smooth, glossy, non-serrated leaflets on a low, shrub-like plant. Plants with this leaf form were found in rural New South Wales, Australia, where they were called Bindi Bud or Mutant. 7East Genetics bred Drunken Bastard from Subterfuge No.1 × Sangria. Plants without ABC leaves were culled in The first generation from a cross between two parents. F1 ↗, and the leaf shape was stable by The second generation of a cross, descended from F1 plants. Traits can separate into different combinations in this generation. F2 ↗.

Autoflowering / Ruderalis

History

An A plant that starts flowering independently of the length of the day. autoflowering ↗ plant moves into flower largely regardless of day length. In 1924, botanist Dmitry Janischewsky described Cannabis ruderalis from plants around Saratov. The Joint Doctor built Lowryder from Mexican Rudy, Northern Lights #2 and William’s Wonder; the working name of the line was Willy’s Automatic. Lowryder was first released in 2003.

Duck / Ducksfoot

History

Ducksfoot is a leaf form with broad, fused leaflets forming a web. The variety comes from Australia, where Wally Duck brought it to market in the late 1990s. Dutch Passion developed Frisian Duck by crossing a selected Ducksfoot with Frisian Dew and selecting over several years. Auto Duck was developed by crossing Frisian Duck with Auto White Widow.

SWAG

History

SWAG is a smooth-edged leaf form, often with a single lanceolate leaflet, developed by Dr Kaly of KalySeeds. The work began in the 1990s by crossing a variegated mutant Blueberry F1 male with Shesherazade and Sweet Purple. In 2003, Trinidad was developed with a stable webbed leaf. Further selection for leaf shape produced SWAG Original in 2011. Ed Rosenthal and Blueberry Vanilluna were added to the line in 2015-2018.

AD17 / Apricot Delia 17

History

AD17 is a KalySeeds line; the full name is Apricot Delia 17. The source branch is Purple Afghan SWAG, also called Skinny Purple. The single-leaflet form was selected from Afghan SWAG, and Vanilluna Kush entered the line in 2015. Some plants have three-fingered, variegated or curled leaves.

Variegation

History

Variegation is a pattern of differently coloured spots or stripes on a leaf. It can arise from mutations affecting pigment, viral infections or chimeras whose tissues contain more than one genotype. On 25 May 2015, Phytoplant Research found a shoot with variegated leaves on a Pilar plant; Divina came from it. Divina was granted EU plant breeder’s rights on 16 July 2018. In seed breeding, variegation entered the SWAG project through a mutant Blueberry F1 male in the 1990s.

Buds on leaves

History

Cannabis buds usually form at the nodes where the leaf stalk begins. With this mutation, buds appear right on the leaf, at the base or in the middle of the leaf blade. The trait occurs in different strains and is known as leaf buds, piggyback or foliar buds. Some of these buds carry both male and female flowers.

Fasciation

History

Fasciation is abnormal growth of a shoot tip that flattens the stem into a band. The flat stem may bend, twist or split into several tops. Causes include damage, mutations, inherited traits and infections. Fasciated plants occur among the The observable traits of a plant, such as its height, leaf shape or colour. phenotypes ↗ of SWAG Original.

From the channel

I discovered an amusing anomaly in a Freak Ryder F1 clone. One of the colas reached a dead end. A cluster of calyces appeared at the tip instead of a growing point.
