Hey, bro! Today, we’re talking about Purple Punch. Purple Punch — with a play on “punch” as both a drink and a blow — is an indica-dominant hybrid strain known for its sweet flavor.
One of Purple Punch’s main features is its appealing appearance. Its buds are typically covered in a thick layer of purple coloration, giving them aesthetic appeal. It also usually has a strong fruity aroma with notes of berries and grapefruit.
It quickly became popular among cannabis users, and its genetics began being used in new crosses.
Meet my mom and dad
Purple Punch entered our world through a cross of two popular strains: Granddaddy Purple and Larry OG.

Granddaddy Purple, also known as GDP, is a legendary strain that originated in California. It was created by crossing Big Bud with the unique purple strain Purple Urkle. GDP is famous for its beautiful purple and purple-green shades.
Larry OG, or Lemon Larry, is another popular strain, created by crossing OG Kush with SFV OG. It is known for its lemon aroma and high THC content.
This cross brought together the best qualities of both predecessors: Granddaddy Purple’s beautiful purple coloration and Larry OG’s aroma.
Hawaii → worldwide recognition
Purple Punch was created in the Supernova Gardens laboratory. Supernova Gardens is a group of cannabis breeders from the Hawaiian Islands. These guys earned a stellar reputation among growers around the world specifically through their work on Purple Punch.
In 2012, the Supernova team traveled to Washington, where they came across a male Granddaddy Purple plant from breeder Ken Estes. They crossed GDP with a female Larry OG found in a pack of seeds from The Cali Connection. That was the birth of PP’s first, original version.
And yes, I have a cool story about what happened next to PP and Supernova Gardens. In 2013, they shared the clone with several people during a trip to Southern California, including a grower named Budologist. Supernova Gardens was very careful with this clone and wanted to entrust it only to people who deserved it.
Here’s an interesting twist: The Village, a cannabis breeder who worked with Budologist, also managed to get a PP clone. He had already heard about this plant’s reputation, though he didn’t yet realize its full potential. But everything he’d received from Budologist before had been amazing, so The V. simply got to work.
With Supernova Gardens’ consent, The Village began actively spreading the genetics through the clone he had received. And you know what? Purple Punch’s popularity skyrocketed! It became a real hit among growers in California. Many credited Purple Punch’s success to The Village’s genius.
Over time, the strain grew increasingly popular. It even reached internationally known commercial cannabis growers such as Jungle Boys. “Punch Hurricane” simply blew minds, and every influential cannabis publication named it the best strain of 2017.
That same year, Budologist and The Village collaborated with Symbiotic Genetics and released a new batch of Purple Punch seeds. It was Purple Punch “Alpha Cut” x (Purple Punch The second generation of a cross, descended from F1 plants. Traits can separate into different combinations in this generation. F2 ↗), and let me put it this way: that cross became the hottest strain of the year! A new wave of Purple Punch began, simply stunning everyone.
That’s how Purple Punch became a favorite among producers and breeders, and was used in many amazing crosses, including the famous Mimosa from Symbiotic Genetics. Incredible how this story keeps developing, right?
Following Purple Punch’s trail

Cannabis breeders are nothing less than inventors: they cross different types of plants to create strains that are increasingly potent or simply enjoyable. So it’s no surprise that Purple Punch genetics appear in several other strains. Some of the best known include:
- Mimosa.
- Blue Sunset Sherbert: an intense aroma.
- Slurricane: an indica-dominant hybrid.
- Purple Punch Auto: an A plant that starts flowering independently of the length of the day. autoflowering ↗ derivative of the classic Purple Punch strain.
This one’s special

Purple Punch is famous for its indica structure: compact, small plants with sturdy branches covered in buds.
PP leaves have a dark green shade, sometimes with visible purple veins or edges. The buds are typically compact and dense. They are purple-lilac or deep purple, sometimes with striking orange or pink hairs that give them a dramatic appearance. You can see numerous resinous trichome crystals on Purple Punch’s flowers and leaves.
Inside buildings, Punch delivers excellent results, particularly with the SOG method. Its resistance to fungi and pests makes high planting density achievable. Reaching maturity smoothly 50–60 days after flowering begins, the plant delivers generous yields.
Growing in open ground is also an appealing option for Purple Punch enthusiasts. Thanks to its short internodes and dense structure, the plant forms many curled flowers, creating a magnificent appearance. The harvest can be collected in late September. It should be noted that in the open, the plants also have high resistance to fungal diseases, insect pests, and other problems.
The harvest features large, dense flowers with perfect balance and a delightful aroma. This strain is striking for its high terpene content and sticky resin.
Oh, what tasty treats!
Purple Punch is a real find for fans of flavorful strains. Purple Punch is known for its sweet, fruity flavor, which makes it very appealing. Its aromatic profile is often described as sweet, with notes of berries, grapefruit, and grapes.
But beyond the sweetness, it can also have mild spicy or earthy notes that add a special depth to its flavor. I wonder which nuances it will express in a particular The observable traits of a plant, such as its height, leaf shape or colour. phenotype ↗ or generation of Purple Punch seeds.
It’s important to understand that the flowers’ flavor can vary slightly depending on many factors, such as growing, drying, and storage methods. And, of course, each of us perceives flavor differently, so everyone may find their own particular nuances in Purple Punch. But I can say for sure: this strain is special!
