Hey, bro! Glad you’re here again. Today, I’m inviting you on an amazing journey through California’s green valleys, into the heart of the region, the Emerald Triangle, Humboldt County, where cannabis legends are made. Meet Humboldt Seed Company (HSC), a company that doesn’t just grow plants but makes history. Get ready to learn about one of the industry’s greatest players, combining passion, science, and a love of nature.
The dream team
This company was born in 2001 through the efforts of biologists from California’s famous Humboldt County. Their initial mission? Work on cannabis breeding for patients, drawing on California’s legendary medical marijuana initiative, Prop. 215. But, bro, that was only the beginning.
Over the years, HSC both maintained its reputation and grew, moving into elite seeds for the recreational market. These professionals know their craft so well that they organize real expeditions in search of the best The observable traits of a plant, such as its height, leaf shape or colour. phenotypes ↗, using the most advanced scientific methods. The result? Let’s meet the project’s team, then go deeper into the history.
Nathaniel Pennington

Founder and Big Boss
Nathaniel, founder and CEO of Humboldt Seed Company, has been breeding cannabis and working to restore rivers and salmon populations in Humboldt County for over 20 years. We’ll talk more about his achievements and value to the operation later.
Ben Lind

Ben Lind is more than Humboldt Seed Company’s co-founder and chief science officer. This guy has lived and breathed cannabis since childhood. Through knowledge passed down in his family, he realized how critical it is to preserve seed breeding for the future.
Then something interesting happened, bro. While Ben was studying at the University of Pennsylvania and working on paleoecology in Mongolia, he came across stories of prehistoric Siberian burial rituals. From those accounts, he learned how ancient tribes revered, grew, and stored cannabis. This experience ignited his passion for preserving unique, ancient cannabis strains and using their genetics to create incredible new ones.
That passion stayed with him. Ben set off on a global journey into the hearts of Jamaica, Colombia, and Africa to gather genetic heritage from every corner of the world. His mission? Create seeds that would be more than “just another bunch of seeds”: award-winning seeds with a stable, amazing genetic line.
He isn’t simply doing this for business or science. He has a dream: to live to see the day when the whole world knows and recognizes how cannabis influenced, and continues to influence, cultures of every era, from ancient to modern.
And he joined the team pretty smoothly! Ben met Nat at a local salmon market in Humboldt. They had similar backgrounds and the same views on work ethic. Ben ended up helping him harvest, and the guys simply hit it off. In a way, they have parallel experience: both learned from elders, then applied modern science to both preserve and create unique genetics.
Hally Pennington

The heroine behind the scenes who holds all Humboldt Seed Company’s strings in her hands. Imagine: she’s been here from the beginning, right from the moment it all started.
Her father, Nat Pennington, taught her the foundations of breeding from childhood, and taking part in many phenotype hunts gave her loads of practice. Now imagine that she’s the one who, as head of the product department, determines which strains will matter in the future.
She’s at the head of the whole operation. From orders to the complex Metrc tracking system, she keeps an eye on everything. And those seed catalogs you love browsing? She puts them together!
Like a true Humboldt local, Hally burns with passion for environmental justice and Indigenous rights, actively working with a cool charitable organization, the Council for the Rights of Nature. Pretty good, right?
From salmon to cannabis

When you dive into cannabis production, exploring every corner of that universe, you eventually encounter the geniuses working in breeding. They’re like fashion designers of the cannabis world: keepers of historical genetics and creators of the future. These guys were born for their craft and follow that path no matter what. Enthusiasts in this field say you have to immerse yourself for years before truly becoming a guru. Nathaniel Pennington’s story, the great general of Humboldt Seed Company, is exactly that.
Science and breeding have always excited Nathaniel. “I immersed myself in ecology, but at the same time I was growing cannabis and running my business for almost a quarter of a century,” he says. His work gained recognition over time and was published in leading scientific journals.
From California to the global market

At first glance, a scientist and a breeder from Humboldt Seed Company seem to have little in common. Look deeper, though, and it becomes clear: what unites them is a burning passion for their craft and a thirst for knowledge, rather than simple profit.
As the company develops, its internal potential grows, making HSC increasingly influential in the global cannabis market. Here are some of the company’s recent significant initiatives and achievements:
- Breeding and seed production take place in Jamaica, Colombia, and Canada.
- Seed exports to Spain have begun, with shipments to other European countries expected soon.
- Active research and development are underway in South Africa.
- In the domestic US market, the company sells its products in California, Oregon, Michigan, Maine, and Oklahoma.
- Special attention is given to collaborating with California’s Yurok tribe on CBD seed breeding. A new strain called Sugar Pine CBD was recently introduced to the public.
- The company announced the release of the world’s first organically certified seeds for Canadian markets and other legal venues.
- Seed sales have exceeded the millions mark. New goals focus on exporting products to Canada’s legal markets while planning to expand the company’s US presence.

HSC is based in California and has several production sites in the state. As for product distribution, unlike many others, HSC does not clone but grows plants from seeds. HSC has modern technology for producing plants. Customers can choose the plant strains they need from the provided catalog.
In search of the “unicorn”

Every year, Humboldt Seed Company delves into cannabis genetic diversity, analyzing around 10,000 plants at every stage of development. The goal is to select the elite 0.5% that deserve further breeding or cloning. To achieve this, all plants are maintained in vegetative form until flowering begins. After selection, the bulk, 99.5%, is removed, leaving only the best of the best. These selected specimens are then preserved in specialized “libraries” and passed to partners for breeding.
It’s important to understand that phenotype is just one aspect experts consider when evaluating the work. Two other key aspects are chemotype and genotype. They help identify the plant’s chemical profile, meaning its THC and CBD content, and decode its genetic map through DNA sequencing.
Many partners were brought into the process: Happy Dream Farms, Blessed Coast Farm, Humboldt County Indoors, Kind Peoples, Outliers Collective, South Ridge Farms, and other farms. Each contributed its own uniqueness to the genetics, providing either specific crosses or precious strains with their own legends. Some plants had a history: one survived thanks to sock drawers, another was brought from Jamaica. Others resulted from crossing popular strains. However, the partnership wasn’t without difficulties.
Farms joining the initiative sacrificed part of their land to grow plants that might never reach the market. Government oversight requirements and market conditions made it difficult for farms to grow many unique plants for sale. Each required individual testing, bringing significant costs. Partners also closely monitored each plant’s growth, assigning unique numbers and caring for them in a vegetative state under specialized conditions. This made it possible to clone any “unicorns” found in the future.
Thanks to this, Humboldt Seed Company can boast internationally known strains and repeated awards. Over the last three years, the company has received the prestigious “Best of Humboldt Award.” It also develops exclusive strains for other leading companies in the industry.

A ticket to California
I hope this encounter helped you understand that strains alone are far from what makes HSC special. It’s their commitment to quality, heritage, and innovation that makes them industry leaders. Moving along the path from research to commercialization, Humboldt Seed Company raises standards, showing that cannabis always has room for research, discovery, and excellence.
